Nitride vs phosphate barrel.

That was my original plan. It’s about $100 or so to thread the barrel, not including shipping. For $155 I could get a phosphate 20”a2 barrel from Delton or JSE surplus. Problem with that is F marked fsb. For $250 I could get a proper chrome lined phosphate barrel with correct a2 sight. I have 7 AR’s so this is not my primary rifle.

barrels back in the day were chrome lined bore and had a phosphate finish on the exterior. chrome lining adds corrosion and durability and they needed a coating for the exterior so phosphate was chosen because it "absorbs" oil and holds it pretty well vs a blued finish..

Jan 13, 2018 · Hard coat anodize in the upper is around low to mid 60's C scale. Some of the PVD and Cvd coatings can be high 60's to low 80's. Parkerizing etches the surface and holds lube. Solgw phosphate vs microbest chrome So I get that solgw just uses microbest and qc's each one + changes the extractor (which I could do for cheap) In this case these two bcgs are the exact same price. On the other hand, nitride is a treatment that goes a bit deeper than crome does and is also pretty slick. The downside is that chrome is normally better for heat, but that is more of a concern for the barrel than BCG. Really, between the two for a BCG its just a coin toss.

Titanium nitride is a very popular surface treatment for high performance steel rings in high end racing engines because it reduces friction and improves wear resistance. Chromium nitride ring treatments offer many of the same advantages and are typically more popular for street performance engines and even many stock production engines.Nitride creates a very hard surface. It will be more scratch resistant , slicker and foul less. If you shoot a lot the barrel will last longer but in the heat/velocity range of a muzzle loader you would need to shoot an astronomical amount to burn out a barrel. It also creates a pleasant dark gray finish. Jun 20, 2019.

Stainless can be nitride treated but usually isn't. Normally, stainless has a shorter useful life than carbon steel but most shooters won't ever see it. Carbon steel is harder than stainless, and can be treated (or not) with ...But if the nitride barrel is 4150 and the phosphate barrel is 4140, then there is no debate at all, go with the 4150 steel that is also nitride treated.
