There are both a hydraulic filter and suction screen, but you have to pull the lift cover. The filter has a bypass valve if it gets plugged, so your 2000 has probably been bypassing fluid for 40+ years. You start by backing them both off so you have backlash in both, and then adjusting the LH one first to the main nut to zero backlash, and then adjusting the RH one to the LH one for the same zero backlash.
